Northwestern Pacific track owner puts Southern Pacific cars up for sale

SANTA ROSA, Calif. — The North Coast Railroad Authority has decided to auction off nine ex-Southern Pacific lightweight passenger cars, the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat has reported. The nine cars are scattered along the Northwestern Pacific route between Healdsburg and Humboldt County.

“They were beautiful at one time,” said Allen Hemphill, a train buff and director of the authority. “The buyer will have to invest significantly to restore them.”

Most of the cars were operated on SP’s Los Angeles-San Francisco Coast Daylight, and its Oakland, Calif.-Portland, Ore., Shasta Daylight. They last served on tourist trains from Healdsburg to Hopland and Willits, Calif. Those trains ceased operation in 1997.

The authority plans to post bidding forms to its website by April 25, and bids will open May 25. The authority’s website is

SWR Salutes The California Southern Model Railroad Club

Welcome to the digital home of The California Southern Model Railroad Club.

We meet every Tuesday evening between 6:00 and 9:00 PM, the public is always welcome. The first Tuesday of each month is our formal meeting night where club business is discussed. Monthly meetings start promptly at 7:30 PM, all members are encouraged to attend. Other Tuesdays of each month are designated construction/operating nights. Layout construction may go on, but trains usually still operate.  
On Fridays there is an impromptu get together from 6:00 to 10:30-ish where members primarily run trains and just shoot the breeze.
